The cost of forgetting to validate your train ticket

I already mentioned in a previous post the requirement for all train passengers to punch their tickets before they get on board. The reason why I'm reposting this important detail is that TreniItalia, the organization that runs all trains in Italy, just raised their fines if you forget to validate your ticket.

The increase is significant, from €25 to €200 (which translates in $300 these days). If you pay the fine within 15 days then the amount is going to be reduced to €100, if you pay on the spot or at the final destination it is reduced to €50.

Should you forget to punch your ticket, a best practice is to inform the ticket conductor right away. While there is no guarantee that you'll avoid the fine (multa), it might help demonstrate your overall good faith.

Your e book is very informative and helpful for tourists. It is written in English, which leads me to believe that you aimed it at people travelling to Italy. Yet you don't live in Italy? The truth about why so many Italains find it hard to make a living in Italy should have been included, to tell the truth.

Very good point. I may blog about that indeed. Thanks for the suggestion.

You might also want to mention that signs alerting people to validation are being put up too after successful defences against fines were lodged.

Speaking of trains, my husband and I endured a hell ride from Rome to Bologna last January. I will never again complain of the difference between a first and second class ticket as the difference is worth the price!

Paolo - Thanks for posting this reminder. This exact thing happened to us while we were in Italy. They tried to fine me, but luckily I was able to talk my way out of it somehow. We honestly had no idea. Another woman we met on another train was not so lucky.
